English Tutor: Ex-MOE Head of Department (English)

Score English With Formulas Developed By An Ex-MOE Head of Department (English)

Since 2013, more than 1500 students from over 105 schools have benefitted from our ‘Formula-Style’ English Learning System.

80.5% of our students have achieved an amazing 2 to 6 grade jump in their English exams, with 72.1% scoring B3, A2 or A1 from their initial low B, C & D grades.

To the misfortune of many students, English is conventionally seen as a language instead of a subject. The implications are far-reaching. While teaching in school, I noticed that the same student who puts in hours trying to understand mathematical concepts would brush off English as “not learnable''. She gives up on it altogether. It’s a pity because as a subject, English is even more important than Math or Science because it is a compulsory L1 subject for Polytechnic or Junior College admission.

3 myths of English Subject

Foundational myth

Most people think that speaking English from a young age at home automatically translates to a good English grade in school. That is not true. Conversational English is only a small part of the Entire GCE English Syllabus whereby a student is graded

Reading myth

This is an offshoot of the 1st myth. People tend to think that they can build a strong ‘foundation’ just by reading more books or newspaper. Getting your child another copy of Harry Potter is good for cultivating imagination but does little to improve her grades

Practice myth

Doing more exam papers will help your child become more conscious of time, but it doesn't solve the root problem. Albert Einstein said: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results." Without the right techniques, more practices won’t improve your child’s grades

The problem becomes even more serious when the only form of English training in schools (and learning centers) is simply mindless drilling of exam papers. Believe it or not, there are actually no textbooks available for your child to study the English Language in school. Standards vary drastically across schools and even teachers. There's no clear structure for students to study English, unlike the case for Maths or Science.

8 years ago, I became disillusioned with the way language is taught in schools and started exploring a more effective way to help students learn English. My experience as a MOE-certified Research Activist (RA) as well as an English teacher paid off.

After 2 years of intensive research, I developed a unique, revolutionary method to mastering English using formulas – which is not taught in any schools.

Just as how Science and Math can be learnt in a step-by-step way, students can master English more effectively and see quick improvement in their grades with the right formulas.

Here are some students I have helped:

"The Different 'Formula-Style' Techniques Imparted By EduEdge... Really Proved To Be Useful In The Actual Examinations..."

“English was my best subject as a primary schooler, and I’d been constantly scoring As in English in my primary school years, and I had also scored an A* in PSLE English. However, that reality changed when I entered Secondary School and I was struggling with English...The different ‘Formula-Style’ techniques imparted by EduEdge… really proved to be helpful in the actual examinations… SPEAR also helped me plan my essays out more clearly, and was of tremendous help in assisting my thinking process.”

“A 4-Grade Jump Is All The Proof I Needed To Show The Effectiveness Of The Teaching Methods In EduEdge”

“I did not buy EduEdge’s claim that English could be learnt 'formula-style'… that was something I’ve never heard of in all the other English tuitions I’ve been to… I was not too keen on applying those skills in my school examinations and continued to result in my constant grade of Cs all the way till my [final] prelims. It finally struck me that the path I was following was doomed to get me a C grade. Better late than never, I applied all the skills Mr Cheng had imparted to me… my results did not fail my expectations. A 4-grade jump from C to an A is all the proof I needed to show the effectiveness of the teaching methods in EduEdge… One of the school toppers in my school who had always scored better than me was surprised when I had achieved better grade than him ”

“... Steadily Improved From My Initial Cs and Bs To Topping The Entire Cohort For My School Prelims And A Distinction !”

“Coming from a Chinese speaking family, I faced many problems in English after getting in Secondary School… I had been scoring Bs and Cs for my school examinations and I was clueless about how to improve my results… After joining EduEdge, I learnt many techniques to answer comprehension questions as well as how to approach situational and continuous writing effectively. These techniques were taught step-by-step and since there are formulas to summarise them, they were very easy to remember and apply… By religiously applying the techniques and strategies imparted by EduEdge, I steadily improved from my initial Cs and Bs to topping the entire cohort for my school prelims and eventually a Distinction!

Revealing The Success Formula For English

It has been well documented that areas related to language processing are located in the brain’s left hemisphere. Ironically, English is traditionally taught as a “right-brain” subject where students rely on their ‘gut feel’ to determine if the answer “looks" or "sounds” right. The reality is that English can be learnt within a shorter time with the use of the left brain. Through extensive research, we have developed a system that activates both sides of your child’s brain to learn English step-by-step using formulas.

As highly experienced Language Specialists who have taught for more than a decade, we have developed deep insights into the MOE English Language Syllabus and simplify it into small digestible chunks for students. If you realise, the English Syllabus comprises 6 core skills (inner ring): Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. These core skills may be further divided into 32 sub-skills (the multi-coloured spokes).

By analysing top students’ thinking patterns and how they approach the different paper components of the English exam, we have eventually mapped out a specific formula for each of the 32 sub-skills. All students, including your child, can use and apply these formulas even if they are currently struggling with English right now. English finally becomes a very approachable subject for students to do well in exams!

Who am I

Hi, I’m Edwin Edangelus Cheng and I’m the founder and principal of EduEdge Learning Hub. Before founding EduEdge to help students master English easily, I was a school-appointed Head of Department (English), as well as an MOE-appointed Subject Head (Curriculum Innovation). I specialise in making learning more engaging and effective for students.

I am also a trained Research Activist (RA) who’s certified by a Permanent Secretary (Education). There are lesser than 2.5% of the entire teaching fraternity who are RA certified. The rigor of the certification eventually paved the way for the development of my English-learning formula.

Why Learn English Using Formulas?

Easy To Apply

A lack of know-how is the biggest culprit behind poor English grades. At their age, students need to be properly guided step-by-step in their thinking so that they know exactly what to do during the exams. Our formulas are often described as ‘bite-sized’ by the students themselves. Furthermore, it has been refined over the years to incorporate the use of many memory techniques that makes it easy for your child to remember and apply.

Mindful Practices

The endless drilling on assessment books just doesn't work anymore. What your child needs is a guide to thinking and approaching the increasingly difficult English questions set by schools and national exams. The Formula-Style method provides systematic steps in answering questions that have been proven to help them achieve a breakthrough in their English grades.

Develop A Love For Learning

Children learn very differently from adults. They have short attention span. We use a variety of techniques and resources which are backed up by education research. These include group writing, popular culture (songs and videos), current affairs and debates to make learning fun and interactive so as to hold your child’s attention.

Who we help

Upper Primary Students

If learning Lower Primary English is a walk in the park, then mastering Upper Primary English will be a climb up the mountain. As your child progresses from Primary 4 to Primary 5 / 6, you may have seen a drastic drop in the English exam grades because of the steep learning curve. With the school and national exams round the corner, it is time for your child to seek the right help to do well for the PSLE.

Lower Secondary Students

Needless to say, when your child advances from Primary to Secondary school, it is an entirely different ball game. The higher demands of the new syllabus and exam format will really stress out any Secondary 1 or 2 students. By building a strong foundation at the Lower Secondary stage, mastering English at the Upper Secondary levels will be a breeze for your child.

Upper Secondary Students

Is your child still stuck with low Bs and Cs for the English exams? Are you worried that the poor English grade will eventually pull down your child’s L1R5 or L1R2B2 score and severely limit his or her options for Junior College or Polytechnic courses? Performing well in the GCE English exams is important and it is never too late to help your child improve their English grade.

What Do Parents Have To Say About The Formula-Style Method?

Mr The, Inez's father

"I was impressed when Christel was doing the assessment and Mr Cheng could actually pin-point the areas she could improve on. I thought this style (of learning English) is very systematic."

Clarice, Christel's mom

"The staff and principal at EduEdge are very dedicated and hardworking teachers and I can see the pupils they taught over the year have performed very well."

Mr Siow, Ex-MOE HOD, Rachel's grandfather

English is the Most Important Subject

Failing English means failing the whole entire GCE exams – no matter how many ‘A’s the student has achieved in other subject. This means being retained for another year and re-sitting the exam one more time.

Similarly, for the Primary levels, a poor English grade will pull down the overall PSLE t-score. Like any concerned parent, you only want the best for your child and that is to do well in English.

If your child has been working on practice papers mindlessly or attending tuition programmes with little to no improvement to show, perhaps it is time to try something else.

Don’t let your child face another English exam without being equipped with our proven formulas.

At the very least, he/she should be sitting in for the Diagnostic Consultation to pick up a 'Formula-style' technique or two that can help him/her score more marks in the next exam. Sign up now to secure your slot for the Diagnostic Consultation with our Language Specialists.

In the Diagnostic Consultation, you will discover your child’s ‘problematic’ spots and what your child must do to impress the PSLE or Cambridge markers so as to be placed in a higher band.

You are highly encouraged to bring your child’s exam papers along to receive customised feedback from our Language Specialist.

On top of that, learn how the ‘Formula-Style’ method can improve your child’s English exam results by at least 2 grades.
